On rainy nights in March, amphibians on the Sourland Mountain make the trek to their native breeding pools — sometimes crossing Sourland region roads.
The Sourland Conservancy asks drivers to avoid those rural roads on rainy nights for the next few weeks to help ensure the critters’ safe passage.
“The creatures play an essential role in our Sourland ecosystem by eating bugs and providing food for larger animals,” said a conservancy spokeswoman. “Just one car every four minutes can wipe out 75 percent of the population.”
